FLUSHING – The results of a community phone survey conducted by Epic MRA reported general sense of happiness in the city of Flushing during Monday night’s city council meeting. Bernie Porn presented the numbers via a PowerPoint presentation.

Porn began the presentation by revealing 76 percent of the community say Flushing is headed in the right direction – a number he says is far above the federal approval rating. 9 percent of the respondents said Flushing is offtrack and 15 percent were unsure.

Similarly, 95 percent of the survey respondents rated the quality of life in Flushing as “excellent.”

As for the most pressing issues facing Flushing, 7 percent could not name anything and another 7 percent said taxes are too high. Porn said this is one of the most positive sections of the survey, and it is a rarity to find communities without a clear problem to address.

“Usually when there is some concern, there’s one or two issues that are in double digits,” said Porn. “Here there are no issues that are in double digits.”

Basic city services received a 93 percent approval rating, but of the negative responses, 28 percent mentioned snow removal as the top area in need of improvement. Porn called the results “phenomenal” and said he could count on one hand the number communities above 80 percent in this section. He noted Flushing is perhaps the only community to receive above a 90 percent.

The councilmembers praised Porn’s process and breakdown of the results.

“What I have heard as a representative of the city, by word-of-mouth and by direct correspondence, tends to parallel what your survey results are,” said Flushing Mayor Kevin Keane.
