Summer festival season kicks-off June 20-24

FLUSHING — Flushing is set to kick off the summer season with its annual Summer Festival, scheduled for June 20 through 24 in downtown Flushing and Riverview Park. Beginning on Wednesday and ending on Sunday, the festival is Flushing’s largest family event of the year, with something in store for all age groups.

Along with the rides, Flushing’s Summer Festival will host an array of events and activities for everyone. The annual festival will kick off starting with the parade on Wednesday, June 20, which begins at 7 p.m. This year’s parade’s unifying theme will be “Who’s Your Superhero?” The theme will be reflected in the parade’s floats and participants.

The parade, which has been hosted in Flushing since the early 1980s, will begin behind Central Elementary at the athletic field, it will then head west on Coutant Street, south on McKinley Road, west on Main Street and south on Maple Street. The annual parade will begin promptly at 7 p.m. and will last for several hours, as it is expected to have more than 100 entries.

Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Little says that, as a safety precaution, parade participants are not to throw candy to spectators on the side of the road. Many of the individuals participating in the parade will walk near the sidewalk and hand out candy to children as the parade proceeds through town.

Also, this year, the Flushing Chamber will offer discounted carnival wristbands that will allow festival attendees to pay one price for all-day rides at discounted prices. Each voucher is good for one day, from Thursday through Sunday. Vouchers for discounted carnival wristbands are available at the Chamber office, located at 105 E. Main St. in downtown Flushing, or online at www.flushingchamber.com.

Presale vouchers, available through 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, cost only $18 and are available online or at the Chamber office. If vouchers are purchased on site, they will cost $25. The vouchers allow festivalgoers the opportunity to ride as many rides as they like from 2-11 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, noon-11 p.m. on Saturday and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday.

“Flushing’s Summer Festival is one of the many events that the chamber hosts, promoting family fun,” said Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Susan Little. “I am always amazed at the continued support from the local businesses!”
